Senior AOSP Platform Engineer - Remote, Europe
Job Description:
About L4B Software
L4B Software develops secure, reliable operating-system platforms for embedded, regulated, and long-lifecycle products. Our engineers work close to the operating system and hardware platform across Embedded Linux, Android/AOSP, BSP integration, platform security, DevOps, and system validation. We solve complex platform challenges where reliability, security, maintainability, and long-term support matter.
About the Role
We are looking for a Senior AOSP Platform Engineer to develop, customize, integrate, and maintain Android-based operating-system platforms for embedded products.
This is a platform engineering role, not an Android application-development position.
You will work inside the AOSP platform across Android framework and native services, Binder/AIDL interfaces, HAL and vendor components, system security, BSP integration, platform validation, and cross-layer debugging. The role requires engineers who are comfortable understanding problems across the complete Android platform stack and working with SoC/vendor components.
You are not expected to be primarily a Linux device-driver developer. However, you should be able to understand and debug interactions between Android, vendor components, BSP, kernel, firmware, and hardware when necessary.
What You Will Do
- Build, customize, integrate, and maintain production AOSP platforms.
- Develop and modify Android framework and native system components.
- Develop and integrate Android system services and Binder/AIDL interfaces.
- Integrate and debug HAL and vendor platform components.
- Integrate SoC vendor software and BSP components into the Android platform.
- Debug complex issues across framework, native services, HAL, vendor, BSP, and kernel boundaries.
- Develop, integrate, and troubleshoot SELinux policies.
- Work with Android boot, init, permissions, VINTF, and Treble-related platform components.
- Integrate and maintain Android platform-security mechanisms.
- Support secure boot and verified platform configurations where required.
- Support Android compatibility and platform validation using CTS, VTS, and related test suites.
- Support OTA and platform-update mechanisms.
- Analyze system performance, stability, boot, networking, and reliability issues.
- Improve AOSP build, integration, and CI/CD workflows.
- Work closely with Linux, security, validation, and DevOps engineers.
- Produce maintainable technical documentation for platform changes and integration.
What You Bring
- Strong professional experience developing AOSP at platform/source level, beyond Android SDK application development.
- Strong understanding of Android system architecture and the AOSP source tree.
- Hands-on experience with Android framework, native services, or system services.
- Strong C/C++ development skills.
- Experience with Binder and AIDL.
- Experience integrating and debugging HAL and vendor components.
- Experience with Android BSP and SoC vendor integration.
- Hands-on experience with SELinux policy development and debugging.
- Good understanding of Android boot flow, init, permissions, and platform configuration.
- Strong Linux and Android system-debugging skills.
- Ability to diagnose problems spanning multiple platform layers rather than only a single component.
- Experience with AOSP build systems such as Soong.
- Strong Git and structured software-development practices.
Java and/or Kotlin experience at Android platform level is useful, but this is not primarily a Kotlin/Java application-development role.
Strong Advantages
Experience in one or more of the following areas is highly valuable:
- Qualcomm Android platforms and vendor/BSP integration.
- Android Verified Boot (AVB) and dm-verity.
- Android file or block-device encryption, including FBE and dm-crypt.
- Android Keystore, KeyMint, hardware-backed keys, or StrongBox.
- Secure Boot and chain-of-trust concepts.
- Trusted Execution Environments such as ARM TrustZone.
- Hardware-backed attestation and secure key provisioning.
- Anti-rollback and secure-update mechanisms.
- Android A/B or Virtual A/B OTA updates.
- CTS, VTS, GTS, or vendor compatibility testing.
- Android security-patch integration and vulnerability remediation.
- VINTF and Project Treble.
- Linux kernel and Device Tree knowledge sufficient for platform integration and debugging.
- Bootloader and firmware integration exposure.
- Android performance analysis and optimization.
- Experience with regulated, security-sensitive, or long-lifecycle products.
What This Role Is Not
This role is not focused on Android application development. It is also not primarily a Linux kernel or device-driver development role.
We are looking for engineers who operate at the Android platform level and can integrate, secure, diagnose, and maintain the complete AOSP system while working effectively with BSP, SoC, Linux, security, and validation specialists.
What Success Looks Like
- You become a technical owner of significant parts of the Android platform.
- You can take complex platform issues, trace them across system boundaries, identify the responsible layer, and drive them through to resolution.
- You help deliver Android platforms that are secure, stable, maintainable, testable, and suitable for long-term product use rather than one-off Android builds.
